15/7/17: SUMMER FLYER IS OUT! EMAIL macdoc@macdoc.com FOR YOUR COPY

Quad core i7 MacMinis in stock... various configurations...

WWDC Major changes in the Mac Universe

Watch the Keynote here: https://www.apple.com/apple-events/june-2017/

The announced iMac Pro is stunning but not available until December. The whole line tho got upgraded to Kaby Lake processors as did the existing Retina laptop line. The real news tho is the move to the iMac Pro coming in December. This is serious horsepower in an incredible chassis.

There will be a summer flyer out shortly. We will see price reductions on some used machines as well.

9.7 iPad Pro 128 Wifi with Applecare to Feb 2019 for $880

Spring sale. Read carefully, some hidden gems in here. I’ll be back in Mississauga in a few days, staying put until 2018.

David Is off to Australia for 3 months but staff are available..

BREAKTHROUGH PRICE 27" 3.3 gHz 5k iMacs almost gone just a handful left

16 gigs with 2 TB Fusion drive $2490. Factory refurb. Simply the best deal we’ve seen in a long time. 5 year machine for many users. Astonishing value...limited number Includes Apple Keyboard and Magic Mouse. 100s have been sold already. Special Pro user deal 32 gigs of RAM and Applecare to Feb 2020. $2770 one 4.0 i7 arriving but we’ve found thes Quad i5 3.3s to hang in very well against earlier i7s. Great for ProTools and of course graphic and photo users. Can’t quite swing the 5k…hot price on the 21.5 4k just in - one only
Want a 2016 Retina?

The screen and drive speed will take your breath away. Bundle with monitor starts at $2770.

USB-C only on 2016 MacBook Pros presents a small challenge with some great rewards

- 13” 2016 8 gig 240 flash with our demo 21.5" LG UltraFine and extended AppleCare $2770 -

One only - such a brilliant performer. With a single cable to the monitor that also charges the MacBook Pro this is a most elegant solution for the professional that appreciates Pro-level color and an incredible 2560 x 1440 companion screen and light weight to travel. For even more workspace and the monitor I use Dell 4k - same price of $2770 2 only. Available bundles on both the 4k LG and the 5k with 13” and 15” 2016 models. Save big.

Now for the good stuff…..there is a big time wow factor in these new MacBook Pros - happy to trade you up.

Hands on commentary on the 13” and 15”  2016 Retina MacBook Pro we have in stock.

Despite the high price and compatbility issues the 2016 MacBook Pros sure deliver in two areas.....drive speeds are off the charts in Black Magic Speed test….2-3 GB per second. The real treat is the improved screen. Doing side by side with my previous generation Retina....the new one is brighter with better colour and real “pop” comparable to that of the 5k iMac.

  1. 1/2 a lb lighter, ....
  2. really a treat for photography.
  3. Downsides...pricey, USB-C only .....
  4. There are no other ports - we have the dongles tho.
All monitors except the exceptional USB-C only LG 4k and 5k screens will require adapters.
Yup that's it …two USB-C native monitors to choosed from but at 500 nits the LG screens are spectacular with very accurate colour.  However there are adapters to HDMi and VGA - lots of support periperipherals are coming.
If screen quality, drive responsiveness and to some degree weight are priorities…then by all means have a serious look The LG Ultrafine monitors Apple is selling are a perfect match in colour quality and brightness. Truly breathtaking.
We have a bundle on with our demo 13" and the 4k UltraFine..some trades welcome

Price and practicality at the moment make the 2015s the better value to get the work done…..and they are superb reliable machines.

The 2016s are eye candy in a number of ways.
  • The 15” screen is spectacular with bright vivid colours…500 nits puts it on a par with the 5k iMac!.The 2015 Retina laptop screen was no slouch at 303 nits…the 2016 screen alone is worth the price of entry.

  • I'm finding the larger trackpad a bit hard to get used to. I don’t use gestures etc so much is lost on me.

  • The OLED bar is sensitive and easy to get used to. The backlit keys are a whole level up in looks and easy to adapt to. It is lighter than the 2015 tho 13” 2016 felt very light - almost like an Air.

  • The 2016 15”  is a work of art .. Just looks and feels Pro. Gone is the backlit Apple logo. As with the 13” the drive speeds are insane. Battery long lasting if if smaller and charges really fast. Last but not least…the sound quality and fullness is incredible. Pop Netflix to full screen and get lost in the image clarity and sound field.

HOWEVER… high prices tho has led to a rush on 2014s and 2015s - and we have a very few left at excellent prices.

iMac 21.5 3.1 i7 Quad  Turbo boost to 3.9 gHz  AND hyperthreading for 8 processing threads
Dual Thunderbolt USB 3.0 GT650m discrete video maxxed RAM 8 gig 1 TB (not SSD) drive

This model is powered by a 22 nm, 64-bit "Fourth Generation" Intel Mobile Core i7 "Haswell" (4770S) processor with quad cores (four independent processor cores on a single silicon chip, each with one thread). Each core has a dedicated 256k level 2 cache and all processor cores share a single 8 MB level 3 cache. It also supports Turbo Boost 2.0 (up to 3.9 GHz) -- which "automatically boosts the processor speed based on workload" (so if an application is only using one of the four cores it will automatically increase the speed of the core in use and turn off the unused cores) -- and "Hyper Threading" -- which allows the system to recognize eight total "cores" or "threads" (four real and four virtual).

Perfect even for Pro audio or almost anything else and many prefer dual smaller monitors and that is so easy with this model. Far and away the most horsepower for the money of anything around. with 8 processing threads that’s a lot of ooomph. Lower price too. This will run two additional monitors up to 27” each as well.

Backup with ease...Backup is critical.

For as little as $77 including the hard drive you can have totally safe backup!! . The backups are easy and as frequent as you wish and if something goes wrong on the main drive you can immediately boot into the backup. What are you waiting for??

We've rescued way too many "almost disasters" in the last few months where drive component failures or directory failures have put important data at risk. Storage is so cheap right now there is simply no reason not to have backup and preferably removable backup

Drive recovery. Despite our years of warning sometimes drives fail at awkward moments. We get most of these drives back at a reasonable price. PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL BEFORE TRYING ANYTHING YOURSELF.

CAUTION: We are seeing too many drives failing in 2-3 year old portables. Please backup daily, we highly recommend having your drive scanned for bad blocks. We'll do it for free with the purchase of any backup drive.

Thanks to all for their support over the years ..send friends!

In case you missed it, the Apple Event of October 27th 2016 is here (watch the video to get caught up). Macdoc has the new MacBook Pros, if you come by you can even play with one at the office.

New MacBook Pro 15” is a beast ……and priced accordingly. USB-C ports only …..talk to us. There are lots of options available right now that may suite your needs better.

New batch of pre-orders for the OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock starting soon email parts@macdoc.com to be put on notification list.

OLED is coming. I've been waiting for this tech to mature for a while. By an odd set of circumstances I ended up with a 55" LG 4k OLED that had some damage for a ridiculous price
So I thought I'd jump in as "early adopter - As one of the mags said reviewing the new Dell 30" OLED ....it's bringing an Imperial Battle Cruiser to a star fighter dog fight - yes it is simply that big a deal.
The question of Black is over...it is simply black...period full stop - this game is over .
Bright ...yep - off the wall - an Apple Thunderbolt display is excellent at 350 nits....the OLED is typically 540 up to 800!!!! - I had to knock it down a bit using it as a computer monitor on the Retina laptop
Colour accurate?? you bet ....just about perfect - Expect to see this technology roll out in laptops, iMacs and monitors very shortly. Processors might be in a pause but displays are about to take a huge jump forward. No question LED colour is very good on the better screens. This will be better across the board.

10.12 Sierra? Be careful, talk to one of us first. You cannot return to your previous OS. Not all machines can run Sierra, and there are video card restrictions too.

El Capitan. Using Yosemite? - do it but back up first. If you are coming from earlier than 10.8 - you need to upgrade to 10.8 first

Note all machines that will run Yosemite will run El Capitan which is out now but...BACK UP FIRST. We like the OS very much but each person has different requirements so tread carefully.

Flyers are to generate a conversation so we can identify your needs and a solution that fits your budget. It's not a grocery flyer. At times we will have some specific deals that are attractive but every person has different requirements - we retain our first pro client from 30 years ago as we meet his changing needs over time. The flyer serves to let you know of new things, things to watch out for, and sometimes specific deals that are attractive like the 21.5 i7 iMac - a total powerhouse for cheap. Primarily they are a start to a conversation.

PLEASE email any requests instead of phoning - with our sales volume and attention to specific needs plus variety of products we simply cannot do justice to your needs on a phone call. Upgrades and drives from OWC are best directed to parts@macdoc.com

MacDoc clients seem to want to keep me around for a while so plans are for another decade with me playing senior curmudgeon while staff prepare their coup down the road some ;-) Oz GF and I will be doing our escapes tho. :D

WE NEED TRADES - from 2009 forward (limited models) - fair value offered on your older Macs - save tax

Note - we do NOT sell iPhones

Communication - choosing a computer takes some time and dialogue...please try and use a desktop or laptop rather than an iPhone ...there is a lot of detail and information in many of our replies and trying to do that on a tiny screen or by phone is an exercise in frustration for us both. Retina 27" iMac under $2k. recommended - Arrived - test drive it. Bring your high end photos . Note...10.10 only on the 5k iMac - base and i7 model in stock.

Set the 5k iMac up in the office and running some 4k stuff and my higher end photos. Glorious but the big surprise is the sound - big improvement. We have it set up beside the standard 2K Apple screen and the detail differences on hi-rez photos are obvious and delightful.

El Capitan? - backup and then try it...good work from Apple. Available on all qualifying machines from us. Do not try and jump from 10.6.8 directly to El Capitan....talk to us first.

Lots of fantastic deals.
There has never been such a lovely selection of high power MacPros, family and production iMacs and finally some 15" non-Retina as well as terrific deals on 15" Retinas some with long warranty. Let us help you choose and more and more people discover the thrill of a current Retina as their main machine. Trades welcome

Battery breakthrough cost effective batteries now for late model ( up to 2012 ) MacBook Pros from $139
Bundle with new battery and 480 SSD $399 installed

Tilt Sale - we have a few perfectly good working MacPro 5,1 with bent handles. Get $150 off AND a year warranty on them - they rock....sometimes literally ;-) -

What's with the concentration on 15" Retina's? With the release of the current MacPro designed around 4K video editing and the emergence of cost effective Thunderbolt arrays...the Retina 15" replaces the MacPro towers for many users - basically anyone not doing 4k video. With support for 2 x 27" screens PLUS HDMi out and it's own wonderful Retina workspace the Retina 15" becomes a full production/desktop powerhouse that you can pick up and go.

Most power users will have a portable as well....we see the Retina 15" with a 27" monitor of your choice ( like a matte screen for designers ) a better and more flexible choice. Managing one machine is far easier and we recommend concentrating your tech dollars on a 15" Retina plus monitors as a better strategy. OR ..get real horsepower in an 8 or 12 core tower with fully open architecture and huge ability to upgrade and flexibility on OS choice and drive choices and monitor choices.

Why not the iMac? Updated Indeed why not now?? the current Retina iMac is a terrific machine. Ground breaking. The same caveats applies tho - not flexible on space and power as the previous generation MacPros are..but wow what a screen and state of the art in video card. Previous generation iMacs are now very good value - open architecture....easy to rig with SSDs

Monitors. Picked up a Dell 27" Ultrasharp for use in Australia and really enjoyed it. Superb value and quality imaging. Dell is offering some fine colour accurate iPS screens at superb pricing including a new U2414H unit with ultrathin bezel that allows almost seamless workspace the size of a 30" but with flexible arrangement for $600 or so. Lovely set of inputs as well.

24" and 27" Dell monitors on special and some exciting new models as well including 4k in stock.

The SSD & Flash revolution from a pleased client.
Since I installed the Mercury Accelsior_E2 in my MacPro 5,1 it feels like I got a brand new CPU… everything is soooo much quicker! Opening, saving, copying files… Duplicating a 4GB file takes 10 sec. compared to 70 on a regular drive! I'd swear I upgraded the whole computer - who needs the new mac pro? I'm getting a Read/Write of 500-700 MB/s - so imagine all the time I save doing just about anything! Thanks to MacDoc for all your suggestions and quick response and helping me make the right decision again and again, for the past 10 years!  Raymond - graphic designer

Changes we see coming

The move to 4K & 5K screens in the content creation space including iMacs which are here now at amazing prices - wait a bit on jumping to a 4k standalone screen. This has implications far beyond movie and TV streaming. It includes your family photos and videos. Talk to us. OLED will become mainstream soon promising spectacular screens for desktop and laptop.

The move to Thunderbolt 2.0. Maturing tech - lots of choices upcoming in particular from OWC. USB-C in the offing ....already in the ultra-slim MacBook and now many accessories coming. Look for this in the MacBook Pros later this year.

Best Line from the first non-computer oriented CES."until you need to get work done. Then you grab your Mac."..yup

MacPros late 2013 available to order and several in stock including some deals. We have RAM in stock.

Happy Birthday Macintosh - 30 + years - we're in our 30th now.

Touring machines. We have one current MacPro in stock for touring and setting up one Retina. Lovely design..internal SSD is blistering fast. Six core in the MacPro we think is the sweet spot as before and we have some in stock. We think you need to work with the new machines to appreciate their value and sometimes anticipate hiccups in your workflow.

Mac universe overview

Haswell Retina's - we were impressed with the drive speed of the big Retina a in the 700+ MB/s in either direction but we think the winner for value is the 13" Retina 8 gig 256 for those not doing heavy media production. Only $200 more than the Air this is a superior machine all around and with 1680x1050 resolution that's the same workspace as the discontinued classic Hi-res screens and it's anti-glare as well. The companion to this for those not doing upper media work - the 15" with Iris Pro is $400 more and offers the bigger screen and an i7 quad. If you can live with 256 drive space - either of these are good value. Just be a little careful jumping as this is a new processor and OS - these cannot boot Mountain Lion.

Yosemite??? oh yeah...we like.Make a clone backup and most of all talk to us before jumping in especially directly from 10.6.8 - We suggest Yosemite needs at least 4 gig RAM to perform well

New MacPros - Apple narrowed the market for the MacPro but the outcome is excellent for the previous gen machines, open architecture towers at the prices they should have been in the first place are being snapped up by savvy users. Superb prices on the MacPro towers up to 12 core. 2.93 8 core. We have a selection of drive RAM and video cards including CUDA supported. Currently f 2.4 and 2.93 8 core on special various configs 90% of the rendering speed of a 12 core at 1/2 the price

Best Sellers We continue to think the 2012 model MacBook Unibody represents outstanding value for a wide variety of uses. With the ability to upgrade to 16 gigs of RAM, any SSD or standard drive and outstanding battery life plus durability - there is nothing in Apple's current line up to compare for value. The 2.3 MacBook Pro with more power and enhanced features is

Current MacBook Airs. We like this category but not for everyone - talk to us. We expect a Retina Air 12" that might be an excellent machine.

Screen size versus resolution - because the 13" Retina is a smaller tho better screen - getting the 1680x1050 on it results in a smaller image - might be hard on some eyes. The same applies to the 13" Air. Work with us to get the correct screen for you.

Current MacBook Pros - We adore the Retinas and approve of the open architecture of the classics allowing dual drives. In the 13" we prefer the 2.9 i7 for performance and value
Previous gen - adding am SSD and/or RAM can transform them.

Current iMacs Impressed with the Retina screen - hoping for a standalone screen soon. Means great deals on the non-Retina.

Previous gen Aluminum iMacs represent superb value and flexibility on OS and drive configurations. For Admin work a 20" offers stunning performance with an SSD as low as $599 with 4 gigs of RAM. These same machines for family use can go up to 2TB cost effectively for movies, music and all those photos :D

FusionDrives - quite pleased - you must be on Mountain Lion or up and we can do one for you in a variety of machines as long as you are on Mountain Lion. Be careful using with large files as the speed is not there for large media use.

MacPros now and then
The MacPros might seem only for the heavy production situations after using them personally I'm pleased to see that there are distinct benefits for the the multi-tasking power user as well.
This is the first Mac that no matter what you throw at it - it does not bog or hesitate. Oh yeah - completely silent. The OS distributes the processing across the cores up to 24 processes at a time - brilliant.
You'll not regret it. Long term buy for the discerning Mac lover

Wanna know how much better an 8 Core Nehalem is over your 2.8 8 core previous gen? Email us..hint - 400% speed gain on AfterEffects...! 16 processing threads really!!! The Westmere even faster. Our current value champ is the 2.93 8 core - 90% of the processing of a 2.4 12 core.

We're now in our 30th year and we remain dedicated to offering the widest choice to Mac users to fit use and budget. We'll make your precious tech dollars go further.

Storage and backup There are simply waaaay too many drive and storage options these days......talk to us

CAUTION:

We are seeing too many drives failing in 2-3 year old portables. Please backup daily, we highly recommend having your drive scanned for bad blocks. We'll do it for free with the purchase of any backup drive. Talk to us. Replacing the internal drive with larger, cooler running long warranty drives is worth doing as well.
Drive recovery . Despite our years of warning sometimes drives fail at awkward moments. We get most of these drives back at a reasonable price. PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL BEFORE TRYING ANYTHING YOURSELF.
